Race: Split
Society and Politics :
Split society is based in a set of strict and arcane martial laws and rituals, the origins of which are lost in the mists of time. Power is divided among ancient blood-clans or 'families' each consisting of hundreds of thousands of Split. The head of each of the families is cloned some twenty years before their predicted time of death to provide a new leader. Many families can trace their leader's DNA to the founding of their family millions of years in the past. When a leader is overthrown his entire family is subsumed by the new Lord's family. The new Lord will go to great lengths to destroy the gene-store of the defeated leader to prevent his revenge.

The Split's complete faith in power and utter contempt of weakness led them to attack the peace-loving Boron mercilessly when they first encountered them. Their bloody advance through Boron space was only halted by Argon intervention on the Borons behalf.

The Split seem to tolerate the Xenon presence close to their systems and generally do not engage Xenon ships in combat. This policy is highly criticised by other species and may lead to the Split being isolated from help should the Xenon turn their attention to Split systems. At present, however, the Split enjoy a tentative alliance with the Paranid and Teladi as a member of the Proft Guild.

Biology and Origins :
Our Teladi contact insists that the Split are descended from a race of hardy burrowing rodents. This theory seems reasonable. Split are legendarily agorophobic, their stations darkened and window-less. Only the very bravest Split venture into the open depths of space as a pilot. Highly developed eyes give Split an advantage over many races in space as they can 'see' everything from low frequency radio waves to high frequency gamma rays - ideal for spotting targets and complex engineering work.

Technology and Industry :
Split technology and science is not restrained by the moral and philosophical restraints of the Boron or Argon yet they lack the open intellectual mindset of these other races. A lack of originality and innovation taints their ships and installations. Most Split technologies are stolen or bought rather than researched - with advanced Paranid technology stripped down for Split purposes featuring heavily in their fleet. Much of the Split economy is based on Space Flies - a strange, beautyful and endangered creature the Split, with typical disregard for the finer things in life, use to power their ship engines.

Character :
The Split worship power and revile weakness. They see no moral argument in the destruction of a weaker opponent. They follow orders unquestioningly and show little initiative unless ordered to do so. When so ordered the average Split can be as sneaky as any Teladi and as quick witted as a Paranid. The Split are suspicious and rude - they are not kind to strangers. They can, however, be won over by an impressive show of power or combat skill. Split Pilots are fierce and loyal warriors who make excellent allies in a heavy fire-fight.

Our experts believe this is about as happy as a Split can get.
