Neverwinter Nights is a couple of years old now but I only just got around to buying it (along with the two huge expansion packs). Gorgeous 3D graphics, an easy-to-use interface, a great plot and a large and varied game world all built on the solid foundations of the 3rd edition AD&D rules make NwN a joy to play. Gameplay is moderately paced and well balanced, being challenging but not frustrating and character control is a breeze. All in all NwN is all I could wish for in an RPG but there is more.. With it's user-friendly modding toolkit and multiplayer features NwN is more than just a game; it's a complete online AD&D engine. A DM (dungeon master) can run standard or completely customised games with players from all over the world. Oh, and with a bit of tweaking it even runs on OS-X and Linux too!!
X2-The Threat is third installment in Egosoft's epic space-based open-ended combat/trading series. Having done a little work on the second game in the series (I wrote the star-sector descriptions), some of which has survived in X2 I am somewhat biased towards this series of games but it does look stunning and is great fun to play. X2 is HUGE and could be played for years (if only I didn't have to work, sigh). Whether you want to be a lone mercenary fighting the odds, a disreputable pirate or the founder of an interstellar empire of orbiting factories you can play the game your way. From one-man scout ships to massive battlecruisers complete with fighter batallions you can buy (or steal) and fly some awesome ships, build factories, undertake challanging quests and battle it out with some serious enemies. I have a few reservations about the the simplistic economic system which makes it hard to make a profit without spending weeks playing (or hours cheating) and I find the poor voice acting and lack of background sound in the interactive cut-scenes kills the atmosphere somewhat but all-in-all it is a great achievement.
Judge Dredd vs Judge Death. It's out, it's gorgeous, it's faithful to the 2000AD Dredd mythos and it has some very nice touches for fans and newcomers alike. Despite all this JD2 is basically just another first-person shooter. Maybe I'm spoilt after a year idly enjoying the freedom of Morrowind but going back to a run backwards and plug the zombies shooter I felt somewhat dissapointed. Despite wanting to love this game I kept on wishing it was an RPG rather than a
linear FPS. I wish I could just hop on my Lawmaster and bring Law to the mean streets of MC1. You know - see the sights, bust the perps, pound the beat. There are nice bonus games available but when I think of what could have been done with an open-ended, non-linear Dredd RPG.. still, it looks beautiful.
The Best 2000AD Games Never Made..
- Judge Dredd - RPG - Morrowind in MegaCity1 played as perp or Judge.
- Rogue Trooper - RPG : A lone Genetic Infantryman waging a guerilla war on Nu-Earth.
- Ace Trucking Co - Space Trade/Combat Sim - X2 with laughs (and bugger guns).
- Robo Hunter - RPG : Solve crime and blast robots for fun and profit.
- Mean Team Arena - Online squad-based gladiatorial combat with AI fighters and offline training suite.
Morrowind is the game I had been waiting for since, well, forever. A truely epic, open-ended, non-linear fantasy role playing game. Totally immersive, full of atmosphere with an involving and gripping plot, a massive world to explore and the capability to modify the game in any way imaginable. Very few games have come as close to creating such a believeable and realistic fantasy world as Morrowind. The level of freedom, detail and interactivity is unbelievable. The world you are thrown into is close enough to 'classic' RPG fantasy not to alienate long term RPGers while having easily enough originality to be fresh and exciting to even the most jaded player. Hack & Slash, Sneak & Slay or Cast & Conjure - you can play the game any way you want. Despite the huge world and almost limitless potential for playing there are also huge expansion packs available and thousands of player-created mods ensuring longevity (there are a couple of my mods on this site). Seriously, this game is about as close to perfection as I could wish for. Easily my game of the decade, maybe of all time.
